Aiken Buddy Walk
Nationally, the fist Buddy Walk was held in 1995, there were 17 walks that year.
In 2017 the Buddy Walk had 330,000 participants raising more than $14.2 million dollars in more than 250 events across the country and around the world. Money raised supports local programs and services as well as national advocacy initiatives that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome. In 2013 the Buddy Walk was again ranked in the top 30 fundraising events nationwide for: money raised, number of events, and number of participants.
Locally, the first Buddy Walk in Aiken was held in Aiken, SC in October 2008 in conjunction with Family Connection of SC. In 2009 Knology sponsored the first Buddy Walk in Augusta. In 2010 Upside of Downs of Aiken and Upside of Downs, Inc. (Augusta) began a collaborative relationship with the CSRA Buddy Walk. Walks alternated years being held in Aiken and Augusta. Money raised at the Buddy Walk was split evenly between the two organizations, with a portion of the proceeds sent to the National Down Syndrome Society. In 2023 it was decided that Aiken and Augusta would hold a Buddy Walk in each city. The first Buddy Walk since 2019 was held in Aiken on September 17, 2023.
The 2024 Aiken Buddy Walk Buddy Walk has been scheduled for Sunday, October 13, 2024 in Aiken on the quad on the University of South Carolina Aiken Campus. Check-in and family fun activities will begin at 1:00pm and the walk will begin at 3:21pm.
